She-Hulk returned with Marvel’s Episode 2 She-Hulk: Lawyer Today. The episode was titled ‘Superhuman Law’ and was directed by Kat Coiro. It starred Tatiana Maslany (as Jennifer Walters aka She-Hulk), Mark Ruffalo (as Bruce Banner aka Hulk), and Tim Roth (as Emil Blonsky aka Abomination) in major roles.
The episode saw the debut of a law firm called ‘GLK&H’ whose head Holden Holliway (Steve Coulter) hires Jennifer Walters. But what exactly is this company and what is its significance in the Marvel comics? Let’s dive in.
The law firm GLK&H in comics
The abbreviation GLK & H. stands for ‘Goodman, Lieber, Kurtzberg & Holliway’, named after the founders. They are a Manhattan-based law firm specializing in superhuman law. Located at the Timely Plaza in Manhattan, it first appeared in She Hulk #1 (March 2004). They represent superhumans in a variety of legal capacities, including cases ranging from libel to defense against personal injury. In some cases they have also represented some extraterrestrial cases on the mortal plane, time and space. The current members in the comics are Mr. Bobo, Ditto, Gibbon, Whiz Kid, Momenta, Smedley and Zig-Zag.
Holden Holliway, in the comics, co-founded GLK&H in 1961 after his teenage granddaughter, Sasha Martin, became the super criminal known as Southpaw. Holliway recruits Walters personally, in part because of her She-Hulk powers and her experience as a heroine. He hoped she could serve as a role model and mentor for Southpaw. However, Holliway knows She-Hulk’s reputation as an immature party girl and insists that she does most of her GLK&H business in her more low-key human form as Jennifer Walters (as opposed to the one on the show).
GLK&B in comics
At one point in comics, Holliway had to leave the company in search of his granddaughter. After that, Mallory Book became the full partner of the company and came to be known as GLK&B aka Goodman, Lieber, Kurtzberg & Book. It should be noted that Goodman’s first three senior legal partners, Lieber, Kurtzberg and Holliway, pay tribute to some of the founders of Marvel Comics.
- Goodman refers to Martin Goodman, the first publisher of Marvel Comics.
- Lieber refers to the Late Stan LeeBirth Name – Stanley Lieber.
- Kurtzberg refers to Jack Kirbybirth name – Jacob Kurtzberg.
Disney even recently released a new video to promote the brand new Marvel Studios series, “She-Hulk: Attorney At Law”. This video is a commercial for GLK&H, the law firm that Jennifer Walters aka She-Hulk works for. Check it out here.
GLK&H in the She-Hulk series
In the second episode of She-Hulk Holliday, Walters says he wants her to be the face of their new Superhero Law Division. Jennifer Walters alias She-Hulk will now be a permanent employee of the company. She will represent superheroes and possibly some supervillains in their legal affairs. Maybe she’ll get a response from Emil Blonsky’s accepted (horror) case, but it will be interesting to see her defense in court. She could then name Wong (played by awesome Benedict Wongo) the witness in the trial. Maybe then she’ll run into Matt Murdoch’s (played by Charlie Cox) daredevil. While the show has been dubbed a “legal comedy/drama,” a strong courtroom scene has yet to appear in the series.
If fans are lucky, they might find Jennifer Walters and Charlie Cox as lawyers competing in court. However, one thing is certain: just like DODC (Department of Damage Control), GLK&H will also play an important role in the MCU in the future.
The first two episodes of She-Hulk: Lawyer now streaming on Disney+.
